Help

Short answers about how Kadans works. The same help is in the app under Settings > Help.

How a Session Works

A schedule has weeks, and each week has sessions. A session is a row of segments: warm-up, run, walk and cool-down, each with a duration and often a target heart rate zone.

When a segment starts, Kadans says what to do, for example “Run, 4 minutes, zone 2”, and you feel a tap on Apple Watch or a vibration on iPhone.

The large number on the run screen is your heart rate zone, from 1 (very easy) to 5 (all out). The badge next to the countdown shows the target zone: an arrow up means go a little faster, an arrow down means slow down, a checkmark means you are in the right zone.

A session you finish is marked as done. In the schedule you can also mark a session as done or not done yourself.

Apple Watch or iPhone

On Apple Watch, open Kadans and tap Next, then Start. Or start on iPhone with Run Today and choose Apple Watch under Run With. Either way the watch records the run, follows the session and the route, and speaks the cues.

Apple Watch does not need iPhone during the run. Your schedule, settings and routes reach the watch by themselves while both are nearby, so you can leave iPhone at home.

Without Apple Watch, choose iPhone under Run With. iPhone records the run with its own GPS and speaks the cues. Your heart rate zone needs a heart rate sensor, such as supported AirPods.

Every run is saved to Apple Health, so it also shows in the Fitness app.

Music and AirPods

Kadans makes your music quieter while it speaks and louder again afterwards. The cues play on the device that runs the session, so connect your AirPods to that device.

Running with only Apple Watch: connect your AirPods to the watch, open Spotify on the watch, choose Apple Watch as the device and play a downloaded playlist. Then start the run in Kadans. Swipe to the Now Playing page to pause or skip.

On iPhone, choose your music app in Settings > Music. Apple Music can be controlled from the home and run screens; Spotify opens with one tap.

Routes

Plan a route in Routes: tap the map to add points, and Kadans finds a walking route between them. Drag a point to move it, or tap a point and then Remove Point.

Routes with the Apple Watch symbol switched on go to the watch, up to six at a time. On the watch, pick the route on the session screen before you tap Start.

During the run, the route page below the metrics shows the way. When you leave the route, Kadans warns you, and it tells you when you are back on it.

When Something Does Not Work

Apple Watch does not get your schedule: open Kadans on both. Settings > Apple Watch on iPhone shows whether the watch is up to date. If it says Kadans is not installed, remove Kadans from both and install it again.

No heart rate: wear the watch snugly, a finger's width above the wrist bone.

Waiting for GPS: start outside, under open sky, and give it a moment.

No spoken cues: check that your AirPods are connected to the device that runs the session and that the volume is up. For a clearer voice, see Settings > Spoken Cues.
